THE HUMMINGBIRD MAN
He shows me tomatoes – red cherries, neatly hoed,
He naps in the sun, soaks up heat, sky aglow.
“Meet my new pup,” proudly, “she’s for squirreling.”
His pain burns deep, he hides it, buried, gnawing.
He feeds hummingbirds; his wife, now passed on, did too
Half dozen feeders, all red and sticky; one perched -- then flew.
Naps now are fetal, knees tucked, short high breaths
His body now dimpled, coarse textured, ready for permanent rest.
Son worries, “how does this brief fit just so?”
“How can I do this? I can’t let him go.”
Midnight ends struggle, sound ceases within,
Then a flutter of wings, how’d that hummingbird get in?
Flying into his bedroom, round the room once, then fleeing,
Scene of silent hot tears, then of feathers, then peace.
Thank you, hummingbird man, for that glimpse of tomorrows
When ours souls will fly freely, and our hearts know no sorrow.

The story of the hummingbird is true. It flew into the home, around the man's bed, then back out, around midnight, within moments of his death. The man in the poem was a hospice patient of mine, and I hope the story blesses you like it did me!
