With a Little Luck Single mom climbs out of financial hardship to carve out a career in nursing:"Candy striper. CNA. LPN. RN. That's the journey of Vernetta Parsons from 14-year-old hospital volunteer through the welfare system to charge nurse on the med/surg floor of Bannock Regional Medical Center in Pocatello, Idaho. "A lot of people are surprised when they find out I was on welfare. I'm not ashamed of it," Parsons said. "But I didn't like it. I hated food stamps every month for six years."

A Lesson in Kindness, Kelly Maher Morrissey, RN, MSN:"The ED appeared relatively calm on Sunday morning as I arrived to work my 8-hour shift. I received report on two patients; both sounded clinically stable. One patient, Dominic,* was particularly memorable. Dominic was an 87-year-old man who had been transported from a nursing home to the emergency department (ED) at about 4 AM for symptoms including a 104F fever and chest congestion. He was evaluated, diagnosed with pneumonia, and admitted. During report, the departing night nurse indicated that Dominic was oriented to person only and had been agitated since arrival."

Sarah's Tears by Tony Collins, LVN:"Late one December night on the cancer ward the halls were quiet and solemn, the patients were asleep and most of the visitors were gone. The nurses were gathered about the nurse's station preparing for shift change. Sarah, one of the nurses, was especially tired, having worked seven straight 12 hour days. Starting the I.V., Watts, H. David, The Literature, Arts, & Medicine Database:"This poem explores the act of inserting an intravenous line (I.V.) into a patient just prior to induction of general anesthesia. The physician-narrator is initially full of bravado, stating "I am good at this" and "I'm the best". The physicality of the act is detailed: the vein "lies stretched and succulent" and the needle "waits / like a mosquito attached / by its sucker." By the end of the second stanza, however, when the I.V. has been successfully inserted, the significance of this seemingly simple medical intervention is stated: "I am suddenly aware / I am connected to his brain."

Poems of the Week: Nursing, by John Stringer, The Mediadrome:"I thought that this week we would look at the subject of giving care to the sick, the wounded, and the infirm. This topic varies in its aspects: the care given by the parent to a sick child, or by the young person to an aged parent is one aspect; the care given by professionals to their patients is another. The care given to a wounded soldier on the battlefield often lies somewhere between. I have decided to concentrate on the aspect of nursing, rather than the aspect that might be called doctoring, although I do understand that this distinction is often arbitrary."

The Night Before Christmas on Mercy 1st Main, Betty Ann Cassano, RN, BSN:"One of the sad things about holidays is that hospitals are never able to close down. I've often wished that I could wave a magic wand and make everyone well so they could all spend the holidays at home with their families. And, of course, the nurses and other hospital employees could also spend the day with their own families. But this is not a perfect world and I've never found a magic wand. So hospital doors never close and the people who provide care to the sick remain at or near the bedside. Even on Christmas Eve."
